ISTRES (RAFLP)
No Station Badge Authorized.
The following was sent to me by Barry 'Doc' Hughes, and he would like me to acknowledge that he is indebted to Tony Fleet for the photo.
Istres was actually a sub-unit of Transport Command HQ Upavon, that was located in the south of France on the Mediterranean coast. French title of the base at Istres was Base Aerienne 125.
RAFLP the LP stood for, Liaison Party.
A medic, I was stationed at Istres in 1957, having previously done spells at Upavon and at Lyneham (at Lyneham in SSQ and as the Decompression Chamber Operator) and on CASEVAC.
The photo is of the entire Istres strength as at March 1957 – I was posted there shortly after the picture was taken (can’t quite remember when) to replace ‘Doc’ Gallagher who was going back to the UK . The best blue confirms that it was winter – in summer it would have been KD.
