BRIZE NORTON.
The following item was sent in by Gordon March.
I Joined Brize in January 1969 to start a conversion course on to the VC10, having just returned from RAF Changi.
The other aircraft at Brize at this time was the Belfast, sharing the same Headquarters building, now 101 and 99 squadrons use these this buildings.
The first three months of the course took place at BOAC’s training centre at Heathrow Airport, we were accommodated at RAF Uxbridge during this time.
The next three months were back at Brize part Classroom training and then Flying training, including a Global training flight, eventually joining 10 Squadron to start work.
Most of the work on the squadron was schedule flights to Singapore. A VC10 would leave Brize every day of the year except Christmas day taking familes and service personel calling at RAF Akrotiri, Bahrain, Gan and the RAF Changi
We changed crews at each stop so it took a crew about 10 to 12 days to complete the schedule, followed by three days standown.
By late 1972 RAF Changi closed down and we used the old RAF Tengah airfield for just a refuelling stop then back to Gan.
